Role Title: Principal Scientist (RDQ) – Cell Biology 

Cellular Agriculture is seeking Principal Scientist (RDQ) to provide to perform the role of providing core expertise, management and leadership in all biology-related aspects in the company and applying their knowhow to novel cultured meat processes. This will include spear-heading the development of novel cell culture systems for various adherent and non-adherent cell lines, their characteristic behaviour combined with host materials, media formulations, culture passaging techniques, and their differentiation into target final cell types. The post will align biology-related activities with those in the engineering and operational teams to ensure requirements, changes and new emergences are managed effectively.  

You will be responsible for oversight and leadership of biological research and development across the company. Manage and support a team to ensure high quality and timely delivery of the collective duties and responsibilities. To succeed as a Principal Scientist (RDQ) we ask for the following experience, skills and attributes: 

  • PhD or equivalent experience in a biological science 
  • Typically, a minimum of eight years practical laboratory or industrial experience 
  • Line management of a multi-disciplinary team  
  • Demonstrable ability in delivering complex commercially driven biological technology solutions 
  • Practical experience of stem cell biology, mammalian cell culture, media and cell line development or other related R&D expertise 
  • Demonstrable ability to manage research programmes to deliver milestones, reporting to stakeholders in a concise and confident manner 
  • A solid grounding in molecular and analytical biology 
  • Experience with HSE procedures in a lab or manufacturing setting (not essential) 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills 
  • Complex problem solving in a practical environment 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication style and team working 
  • Demonstrated ongoing development of leadership skills, to support the development of people and the company 
  • Ability to effectively supervise, support, and develop a diverse team 

As Principal Scientist (RDQ) some of the responsibilities will be: 

  • Lead the development of innovative cell culture tools, feedstocks, media ingredients and protocols for laboratory cultured meat research, underpinned by a deep understanding of cell biology 
  • Engage in cell culture process design and development 
  • Act as scientific lead for technology transfer activities, working alongside engineering colleagues. Responsible for identifying opportunities, collating and preparing documentation 
  • Providing technical input on IP, licensing and FTO matters; review of agreements/contracts from a technical delivery perspective 
  • Be responsible and have oversight for the validation of processes across all scales (lab to production) 
  • Support the Executive Leadership Team to ensure highest standards of quality, safety and regulatory standards relating to products and processes 
  • Continually update knowledge and understanding in the field to support the development of the company 
  • Line manage and mentor the team of cell and media scientists, and work alongside the Principal Engineer, and with the Operations Team, to deliver technical objectives/milestones for R&D and manufacturing projects) 
  • Play a key role in growing and developing a cell team within the wider R&D team and assume line management responsibility
